THE WILD TIGERS NEED YOUR HELP AND PROTECTION TOO
The wild tiger is under severe threat from habitat loss and the demand for tiger parts in traditional Asian medicine. Once abundant throughout Asia, today the species numbers only 3,000-5,000 animals in small fragmented groups.
As a result, tigers are protected as endangered under the ESA and under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) – the highest levels of international protection.
Tigers readily breed in captivity, however, and the number of captive tigers in the United States alone likely exceeds the numbers found in the wild, although the exact number is currently unknown.
The Service is working with multiple partners to conserve tiger populations, supporting groups engaged in efforts to fight poaching, establish nature reserves, manage human-wildlife conflict and raise public awareness.
In 2015, the Service awarded funding to 24 projects benefiting tiger conservation in 10 countries totaling more than $1.2 million, which was matched by $993,330 additional leveraged funds. Dear (insert name, committee, organization)
I am a tax paying voting concerned citizen and consumer of goods and services in the United States of America. I am an advocate and supporter of governmental policies and business practices that protect and preserve the natural habitats and the widest variety of trees, plants and animals that inhabit the last remaining undeveloped and minimally impacted open spaces in my state, in the USA, and the world.
I am writing you today about a specific concern for the health, safety, wellbeing, and reproductive capabilities of the large and small wild cats that inhabit various niches in a variety of eco systems in the USA and through out the world.
I am asking you in your duties of office, professionally and personally, your staff, and all legal, and political committees and entities that pertain to habitat protection, remediation, and direct protection of species that you are involved with, focus your time, energy, and resources to insure the preservation of the Tigers, Lions, Jaguars, Leopards, Ocelots, Pumas, Bob Cats and other wild felines that are rapidly dwindling in numbers on Earth.
I am sure you recognize that these species are keystone and top food chain predictors. That the loss of key species is indicative of the collapse of the health and integrity of ecosystems all over the world. As such are predictive of the continued success or failure of human habitation and existence on earth as well.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Mexico Establishes Largest Marine Protected Area in North America. The nation will fully protect 57,000 square miles around the Revillagigedo Islands from fishing and resource extraction Today, Mexico’s president, Enrique Peña Nieto, signed a decree creating a massive marine reserve, spanning 57,000 square miles around the four Revillagigedo Islands—a volcanic archipelago 240 miles southwest of the Baja Peninsula.
The reserve is the largest marine protected area yet created in North America.Though the islands have been a biosphere reserve for over 20 years, the new status greatly expands and fully protects the region from fishing, mining and other extractive industries.
The Revillagigedo Islands are currently uninhabited, and the new status will prevent the development of hotels or other tourism infrastructure. Commercial dive operators, however, will still be permitted to run trips to the area.
While the Revillagigedo Islands themselves support many species of endangered birds and plants, the declaration is aimed at preserving the waters offshore, which support 366 species of fish, including 26 endemic to the islands, as well as 37 species of rays and sharks, including the behemoth whale sharks.
The islands also function as calving grounds for humpback whales and support coral gardens and a range of other relatively pristine marine ecosystems."It’s an important place biologically for megafauna, kind of superhighway, if you will, for sharks, manta rays, whales and turtles," Matt Rand, director of the Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Project, which worked with Mexico in support of the reserve, tells Smithsonian.com. "It’s a pretty biologically spectacular location.
The idea of expanding the sanctuary zone around the Revillagigedos has been kicked around for years. But it took a push by Pew working with local conservation groups Beta Diversdad, CODEMAR and the Mexican Ministry of the Environment to move the project forward.Rand says the reserve has all of the elements identified to make a great ocean sanctuary. "There was a key study in Nature three years ago that found the five key elements to successful marine reserves are that they are large, fully protected, old, well-enforced and isolated," Rand says. "This marine reserve will have all of that except age, and that will come."Of course, a successful reserve is only as good as its enforcement, and Rand says he currently doesn’t have many details on how the Mexican government will implement the no-fishing rules.
In recent years, however, technology has greatly improved and with it the ability for conservationists to police marine reserves, he says. For instance, Oceana’s Global Fishing Watch platform uses satellite signals from vessels on the ocean to track the fishing fleet around the world and the conservation organization OceanMind uses satellites and other technology to monitor marine protected areas as well.
The new reserve is part of a wave of recent ocean preserves. In 2016 then-President Barack Obama expanded the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in Hawaii, which now clocks in at some 582,500 square miles. This same year, President Obama also established the 4,913-square-mile Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument off New England shores. Also that year, an international body declared a 600,000-square-mile reserve in Antarctica’s Ross Sea.
In 2015, Great Britain declared the 322,000 square miles around the Pitcairn Islands a fully protected reserve. In October, Chile created two new reserves the size of France.Rand tells Smithsonian.com that these recently established reserves, as well as proposed projects in places like the South Sandwich Islands, are an encouraging sign.
The current scientific consensus is that at least 30 percent of the ocean needs to be fully protected to conserve biodiversity and healthy ecosystems. Less than 10 percent is currently protected, says Rand, and less than two percent is highly protected."We have a long way to go," he says. "But there’s been incredible growth in the concept of large-scale marine protected areas. It’s almost becoming a race. Hopefully it’s starting to snowball."

Wind turbine project nexed to protect rare Falcons and habitat. A project to erect nine wind turbines near Kibbutz Ein HaShofet in northern Israel, about 18 miles from the city of Haifa, in an ecologically sensitive area where the rare red falcons live, have been cancelled by the District Committee over the exceptional and disproportionate damage it would cause the environment, Haaretz reported Sunday.
Or, in conceptual terms, an environmentally friendly program was killed on account of endangering the environment.
The committee heard testimony last week that the rotating blades of the nine 540 ft. tall turbines could decimate the red falcon population in the area. The red falcon (Falco naumanni), a small bird of prey, 11–13 in. in length with a 25–28 in. wingspan, breeds from the Mediterranean across Afghanistan and Central Asia, to China and Mongolia. It is a summer migrant, wintering in Africa and Pakistan and sometimes in India and Iraq. It is rare north of its breeding range, and declining in its European range.
The area slated for the turbines, south of Kibbutz Ein HaShofet, is not officially a nature preserve, but has a status of an ecologically sensitive area, recognized by UNESCO.
According to Smithsonian.com, the statistics about bird deaths from wind turbines run between 10,000 birds a year that are killed by turbine blades worldwide, to 600,000, with the scientifically accepted number set at between 140,000 and 328,000 birds that die each year from flying into wind turbines. It also appears that taller turbines kill more birds, which is a big problem, as the taller turbines are more efficient at generating energy.

Kelvin Cochran, former Atlanta Fire Rescue Department Chief has filed a lawsuit against the city and Mayor Kasim Reed said that he was terminated in 2015 because of his religion. Cochran is being represented in court by Kevin Theriot who is an attorney with the non-profit, faith-based Alliance Defending Freedom. Theriot argues that his client was suspended because of his religious beliefs, but the city attorneys dispute that. Atlanta Fire Chief Claims He Was Fired For Being A Christian
This whole stir was created after Cochran published his book Who Told You That You Were Naked? which he says he penned specifically for Christian men.
Although Cochran’s lawyers say that he was fired because of his faith, Mayor Reed maintains that the reason the former Atlanta Fire Chief was terminated was because of his judgment. In 2014, an assistant chief who had read the book raised concerns that the book had controversial statements about homosexuality. City Attorney David Gevertz said on Friday that the book categorizes gay people and those having sex outside of marriage with pedophiles, murderers, rapists and those practicing bestiality. It collectively refers to them as ‘ungodly’.
In 2015, Cochran was sent on a 30-day unpaid suspension by Reed in order to discipline him for selling his book without getting proper approval or even giving notice of his intention. Reed then fired Cochran because of his violation of the terms of his suspension when he publically said that he was fired because of his religious views. Gevertz added that the book could bring problems to the city since fire department employees who were fired or denied promotion would attribute it to Cochran’s beliefs.
Cochran has received support not only from Alliance Defending Freedom but also from Georgia Baptism Opportunity Commission and the Family Research Council among other organizations. Theriot told the judge that Reed was clearly retaliating against Cochran based on what the mayor thought as inflammatory matters presented in his book. He argued that punishing Cochran for expressing his viewpoint was a violation of his right to free speech. The judge plans to give a ruling in the coming week.

A Pennsylvania school district capitulated to the demands of a militant atheist who filed a federal lawsuit demanding the district remove a Ten Commandments monument erected on a public high school campus.
New Kensington-Arnold School District agreed to remove the massive monument within 30 days – ending a lawsuit filed in 2012 by self-avowed atheist Marie Schaub.
Schaub claimed the 6-foot stone monument erected outside Valley High School was a religious symbol and therefore was a violating of the U.S. Constitution.
“It’s unfortunate that many people in my community don’t understand or appreciate the separation of church and state, but I hope this settlement serves as an important lesson,” she told the Valley News Dispatch.
Schaub also claimed the monument was offensive to her and her daughter. I can only imagine which commandment she found to be most offensive. Maybe it was the one about graven images.
Anyway, the school district must also pay $164,000 in legal fees.
“We’re very pleased,” Freedom From Religion Foundation attorney Patrick Elliott told the Valley News Dispatch. “It means that the Constitution is being followed by the school district.”
The Freedom From Religion Foundation is a group of perpetually offended atheists, agnostics and self-professed free-thinkers based in Wisconsin. They intentionally bully and intimidate small towns and communities in their quest to eradicate Christianity from the public marketplace.
They are truly an unpleasant bunch of people, folks.
Schools Superintendent John Pallone told the local newspaper they agreed to settle the lawsuit “in order to take the high road.”
“We compromised and agreed to remove the monument,” he said.
The superintendent went on to tell the newspaper he believed the district “had a winnable case.”
“We’re in a position where we just can’t continue to fight this distraction,” he said.
The plaque had been in place since 1957.

:Bogus Service Dogs Create Dangers For Genuine People. For the first three decades of her life, Liz Freyseth watched her independence disappear along with her sight. Born with severe vision impairment, by the time she had given birth to her third child she was legally blind and reluctant to face the world.
I was afraid to leave my own house," said Freyseth, 35, of La Crosse. "I was scared and slower than molasses." When Freyseth traded in her cane for a spunky guide dog named Ellie in 2016, she discovered a new sense of freedom and confidence — and yeteveryoutingisapproached with a hint of trepidation, knowing her safety and that of her dog could be jeopardized at any moment thanks to the rise in impostor service animals.
In the little over a year that Freyseth has had the golden retriever andyellow Labrador mix, she has encountered countless people accompanied by untrained "service" dogs, an abuse of both the laws meant to protect people like herself and a potential threat to their rights.
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a service animal is defined as "a guide dog, signal dog or other animal individually trained to do work or provide assistance to an individualwith a disability, regardless of whether they have been certified or licensed by a state or local government." It is legal to ask whether the dog is a service animal but not to require proof of certification or training.
The ADA takes priorityover less-inclusive Wisconsin statute 174.056, which states that entry or accommodations cannot be denied if "such dog is wearing a harness or a leash and special cape and the person has presented, for inspection, credentials issued by a school fortraining dogs for the blind, deaf or mobility-impaired."
While it ensures theirrights, the looseness of the law is a source of frustration for Freyseth, who has been forced to contact police when untrained service or therapy animals have attacked their own dogs, which can be scarring to the animals and cause them tolose focus on the task at hand.
A particularly traumatizing incident could render the dog unable to continue working, an especially harsh loss given the $40,000 and several months invested in training.
"The hardest part is when we run into fakes,"Freyseth said. "We don’t know where they are, and one attack can change our dog forever. I get scared.
The police don’t know how to respond," she added. "They don’t really know the law."
While unauthorized service capes and harnesses can beeasily purchased online, Johnson says an animal’s manner is a clear indicator of its legitimacy. Growling, lunging, excessive barking and energetic playfulness are hallmarks of untrained animals, as is the language the owner uses for discipline.

D.The Hope:
There's been a lot of recent talk about privatizing air traffic control (ATC), and in response to this talk, both US Senators and Mayors have recently voiced opposition to the idea, in letters to the leadership of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation.
Senate Appropriations Chairman Thad Cochran (R-Mississippi) and Vice Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont), and Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development and Related Agencies Chairman Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Ranking Member Jack Reed (D-Rhode Island) voiced their concerns with any legislation "that would separate the air traffic control functions of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) from critical safety and other programs within the agency and remove those functions from the congressional appropriations oversight process."
They go on to say that "The public would not be well-served by exempting any part of the FAA from annual congressional oversight. A privatized system would provide consumers with no recourse for complaints or mistreatment, as it currently does through the Department of Transportation or their members of Congress. The annual appropriations process provides the oversight of agency resources necessary to ensure accountability for program performance and a sustained focus on aviation safety."
They conclude that the annual oversight also makes sure that the FAA maintains a system that works in all the different areas of the aviation industry, from commercial airlines to general aviation, and small rural communities to large metropolitan cities, and add that they are ready to work with them committee to improve the national aviation system.
They ask that the leadership reject any "risky plans" to privatize the air traffic control system and remove congressional oversight, noting that over the last year, there have been proposals put forward that would "put this vital infrastructure under the control of a private entity dominated by the commercial airlines. On behalf of the tens of thousands of communities around the country, we are concerned about the very real and dire ramifications of eliminating Congressional oversight of this public air transportation infrastructure."
They say that tens of thousands of communities around the country depend on their "local airport and all sectors of transportation to reach far off markets and access critical services such as law enforcement, disaster relief, and medical care," adding that small aircraft and airports are used daily to help with these important concerns.
They conclude by noting that while modernizing the air traffic control system and investing in American infrastructure is a high priority, that "privatization is not the answer."
